Mulled wine, which is also known internationally as glogg, is generally crafted from a red wine. The wine is first warmed and then a variety of spices are added to the wine creating unique blends and flavors. Mulled wine is a warm wine drink that was initially created to mask wine that had soured before refrigeration was available. This technique that once made bad wine once again servable and desirable is now considered a warming winter tradition throughout many parts of the world. During the holidays mulled wine is generally served as a Christmas or New Year’s tradition.

The concept of mulled wine turns many noses however, once you try the flavor and the blends that only mulled wine can offer, you are likely to develop a new appreciation for warm wine. Traditionally, mulled wine is made with the addition of sugar, cinnamon sticks, citrus, vanilla pods, and cloves. There are variances throughout different parts of the world to make the mulled wine a signature flavor in that country. For instance, Romanians generally add peppercorns in addition to the other spices to either red or white mulled wine.

In order to appropriately create mulled wine, the warmed concoction should never be permitted to boil. Boiling wine releases the alcohol content into the air. In order to preserve the characteristics of the original wine and enhance it through temperature and spices a medium—low temperature that is left to simmer for a long period of time is generally recommended.
