There are basically seven types of wine that have become staples in the daily white wine-drinker’s home. Many types of white wine are based solely on the type of grape that they were blended from and can be detected by the naming of the wine after the grape variety. For instance, Chardonnay is derived directly from the chardonnay grape. Sauvignon blanc and gewurtztraminer are also grape varieties that are often labeled as a type of white wine.
Traditionally served with chicken or fish, Chardonnay reached its peak of popularity during the 1990’s, becoming the most favored type of white wine on the market. Chardonnay is considered a dry wine with a wider body than most other wines of the same class. This means that it is a dry wine with a smoother feel to it. Some even describe it as velvety.
Sauvignon Blanc is derived from grapes that grow in cooler regions than most typical wine grapes and is traditionally paired with salads, poultry, and sometimes seafood. It is considered to carry an herbal flavor. A high quality Sauvignon Blanc will carry a hint of smokiness With a typically acidic and strong finish this type of white wine can offer the reminiscent sour fruit quality or it can offer a more tropical fruit quality.
Semillion is a type of white wine that is often well matched and traditionally served with mussels, clams, or a tart pasta salad. Semillion can be easily distinguished by it primary fig quality. This unique taste is readily identifiable because it is a rare but pleasant taste. It is not uncommon for many consumers and restaurants to offer Semillion that is well blended with Sauvignon Blanc. This helps offset the remarkably fruity taste that many pick up on when drinking Semillion. Sweet wine lovers prefer the original variety of this interesting and unique type of white wine.
Muscat is generally a type of white wine served without a food pairing due to its fruity sweetness. This wine is also considered to be easily identifiable thanks to the almost grapefruit flavor combined with a highly distinctive musk-like aroma.
Pinot Grigio is considered one of the most versatile types of white wines on the general market. This is a wine that can be safely served with almost any food pairing. Many varieties of this type of white wine offer a dry, crisp flavor. The term acidic bite refers to the crispness of the Pinot Grigio. Other varieties offer a fruity yet dry flavor that is rather distinctive. Those with a fruitier flavor should be allowed to age at least three years in order to improve and mellow some.
Riesling white wines are traditionally served with pork dishes, fish, or chicken, especially the dry variety. This type of white wine offers a lighter and smoother taste than the traditional Chardonnay and a slight blend of “apples” can be detected not only in the aroma but the aftertaste as well. These are wines that are known for their fresh tastes and their ability to improve with age.
Gewurtztraminer is traditionally paired with pork dishes and many Asian foods. This type of white wine has been criticized for not presenting as refreshing as most dry white wines. Some blame this on their fruity flavors and aromas. While not the most popular of the favorites, it has a strong following of loyal enthusiasts.
